Since 2010, if it wasn’t 2009; I’ve been doing pretty much everything from a ‘less expensive’ laptop available from the Argos catalogue. Within the past two years, it’s been getting slower and slower. On top of that, I occasionally hear the fan inside crunching and grinding away… My laptop wasn’t going to last much longer and, even after backing up all of my files, I was going to need something new to work from.
As my laptop never actually leaves the desk, I decided it would make sense to invest in a PC. This has many advantages and I’d probably get a lot more for my money. Along with blogging and photography, I do a lot with YouTube, which is very demanding on hardware. Brief internet searches suggested that I should be looking for something with the specification of a ‘gaming PC’ and so, with a budget in mind, I decided on an:

It’s been too long since I last posted here and I apologise for that.
A private e-mail received this week from a long-time reader and subscriber has prompted me to make a more notable announcement of the fact that I now have a second blog, dedicated to my walking and hiking adventures.
This was something I was hesitating over the other month and hence, why these pages have been so… Stale? I do intend to keep blogging about woodwork, DIY, baking and the rest, here on Olly Writes. But right now, I haven’t had much of that going on (or, I’ve yet to finish many of the things already started).
To further compliment Olly Outdoors, I have a second YouTube channel (please subscribe) and also a dedicated Facebook Page, which I’m using almost as a form of micro-blogging. I intend to do the same with my Olly Writes page.
As always, thanks for reading and for your patience!
This is a thought that I’ve been carrying with me for several months now.
Since packing my workshop in to storage nearly three-years ago [Yikes! That long already?!], my interest in walking and hiking has grown to the point where it dominates a significant portion of my life, interests and mind. I’m the kind of person who struggles to balance multiple interests at once and can often plough ahead with one obsessively…
First, it was football. Growing a bit older and with college, next came woodworking. My passion for walking was already on the rise before vacating my last workshop but it’s clearly a front runner right now.
So, there’s a lot of content (eight-years worth, if I’m not mistaken) already on this blog. I’m not looking to ‘end’ these pages and certainly, I’d never delete them. But I have been thinking about a new space to dedicate my walking to.

Here on my blog, I receive a reasonable number of hits on a regular basis, regarding a few specific search engine terms that include ‘halogen oven’.
One of these involves air-frying – or, more specifically; the optional air-frying attachment that can be purchased for most 12lt ovens.
With this in mind, I recorded a video several weeks ago and, on Monday evening, I go around to completing the editing process and uploading my brief introduction to the use of an air-frying attachment in my halogen oven.
I do hope this video is of use to others and, if that is the case, I will look to record further footage on the use of the halogen oven.
Thanks for reading and for watching.
If there’s one thing I believe I am very good at then it has to be writing. I’m not a talker and I will sometimes doubt my abilities in other fields where I can otherwise excel. But for a reason that remains unknown, I never doubt my ability to write very well, if ever imperfectly at the same time.
But how could I make a living by putting pen to paper?
Or, should that be: tapping keys infront of a computer screen?

Having started this blog just over five-years ago now (August 2009), I became aware with my previous posting that this one was going to arrive at quite the credible milestone.
There have been times within the last year where I’ve feared as though my stream of content would somehow deteriorate. I’ve always worried that the recent absence of a workshop might encourage long-standing followers to turn the other way… But I’m delighted to see that many of you are still here reading, sharing and particularly to those who leave comments and send me private e-mails.
THANK YOU ALL.
I couldn’t have attained 500 posts here without your support. As much as I do write with a view towards my own psychological benefit, this blog would not be the same without your continued support and contribution. I’d been afraid to look beyond the trees and to show you that I make mistakes in the kitchen and how I seem to spend an almost-unhealthy portion of my weekends wandering around in the wilderness… And yet, the feedback I’ve received from you has been outstanding! I shall always keep this blog alive with the content flowing.
I look forward to writing another 500 posts and I’ll aim to complete that long before August 2019.
There’s one promise I shall make to myself from here on… To share more of my writing; to search and to find an inspiration to ignite the embers of the creative soul that survives deep within side. Two-years ago, I was enrolled on a creative writing course in the evenings. I’m sorry to say that I haven’t done a lot with what I learned there. I promise to try. I do believe.
Thank you very much once more for reading, subscribing, following, commenting, sharing, liking and, well, all the rest! 🙂
It is September and summer’s gone. Winter will soon be here and that means I wouldn’t usually have long left before having to think about wrapping up and hibernation… This year, however, there’s one very big difference and it’s something I’ve touched on in the past. I think it was first mentioned at the beginning of 2013 but I’ve been almost avoiding it ever since, in the hope that it might not actually happen…
So, I’ve been living back at my mum’s house for over a year now and that’s also where my workshop is. I’m looking to move out again because I need my own space and she’s has thoughts of selling on her mind for a long while. If I go, she has to sell. If I stay, there’s no guarantee that I’ll be happy in my home life, which is perhaps the one part we should not neglect.
So, the piggy-in-the-middle here has go to be my workshop…

Some of you may have already noticed that I’ve again altered the title at the top of this blog. At the time of writing this, it reads ‘OP-J’ and I may well play around with header images and more at a later date to create something more than a few characters of text.
I’ve been feeling as though naming this blog after myself has been a little bit too ‘obvious’ and, over on my Facebook page, it’s become complicated with the addition of the ‘ ‘ Blog‘ added to the end of that. It’s a mouthful and I’m looking to keep things simpler. Facebook still won’t allow me to edit my page – it just ceases to respond whenever I click those particular buttons.
I feel it would be hard to create one heading that covers everything this blog is and will be about – isn’t that what sub-headers are for? – but another idea I had was to rename this ‘Olly Writes’; to paraphrase the former title of Frank Howarth’s outstanding YouTube channel (Frank Makes). But I haven’t yet started ‘writing’ on here in the way that I intend to (creative writing and short fiction) once I take a break from woodworking this winter.
This blog is about me and my interests. Things I would like to share. I’m not currently looking to ‘brand’ myself in any way but if you have any thoughts of your own (even if you dislike the idea) then it would be great to hear from you in the comments. I’m looking to do more with photography, walking, writing and hopefully some travel but I don’t want to distance myself too far from the woodwork and DIY topics that have made this blog what it is.
Olly Works? The Rambling Writer? Wrambling? The Wood Rambler?
Perhaps I could reconsider ‘Life as Olly’, which was a short-term experiment last year on a separate URL.
Thanks for reading. 🙂
