Mendip Hills – December 2016

Friday 30th December 2016

This would be my final proper walk for 2016 and I’d decided to keep it as a local one.

I headed for the Burrington Ham car park towards the top of Burrington Combe and, with an early start close to 9am, I was soon heading off, over the road to cross Black Down.

‘The Cat’s Back’ (Part 2)

Saturday 17th December 2016

In Part 1, I had reached the summit of Hay Bluff, with its trig point imprinted with the image of the Welsh Dragon.

It was slightly too soon for me to stop for lunch and I was looking to rejoin the Offa’s Dyke Path heading south, before a descending to cross the Olchon Valley.

Video: My First Walk in the Black Mountains

I’m about to begin writing up a memorable walk from the middle of December. It was my first time exploring the Black Mountains in Wales, having already visited the (central) Brecon Beacons three times along with a few walks in the Wye Valley.

If you’re interested in watching my seven-minute video beforehand, you’ll find it below. I’m slightly disappointed (and surprised, actually) that it hasn’t received more views. Some of you may have already seen it but I’m quite certain many of you haven’t.

Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley (Part 2)

Wednesday 24th August 2016

Having arrived at Lightspout waterfall, I now faced two options in continuing this walk…

I could retrace my way along the rocky route and continue up Mort’s Road to the hilltops. Or, I could tackle an immediate scramble up beside the waterfall…

Either way, I was destined for the summit of the Long Mynd.

A Walk Around Priddy – June 2016 (Part 1)

Sunday 26th June 2016

Ignoring the Mendip Challenge from the start of the month; I don’t think I’d been to Priddy since July of last year.

I didn’t feel like driving too far and, being a Sunday, I prefer to be able to arrive home in the afternoon, so that I still have the evening to myself, ahead of another working week.

Saturday’s Group Walk

Saturday 18th June 2016

So, I’ve now led three walks so far this year, with the most recent one having been in the southern half of the Quantock Hills, four-days ago.

On Cothelstone Hill.

I’d like to point out that any photos featuring other people are not my own – they were taken by Jo, who happened to take them during the walk and uploaded them to the group’s Facebook page… From which, I stole them!

Southern Quantocks – June 2016 (Part 2)

Saturday 11th June 2016

Having arrived at Wills Neck, I felt the urge to stop for an early lunch on the Quantock Hills. Overhead, however, the sky remained grim and overcast. There was a threat it could begin to rain at any moment – as it had started to, back down in Cothelstone.

Instead of heading north towards Great Wood, as my finalised route would do; I turned immediately east towards Lydeard Hill.

Back to the Brecons (Part 1)

Friday 3rd of June 2016

As a final (and intensive) training exercise ahead of last Sunday’s Mendip Challenge; I left work at 12.30, jumping on to the M5 motorway and then west across the Second Severn Crossing and in to Wales.

It was roughly one-year since my only prior visit to the Brecon Beacons. I had returned to take on the Four Peaks Walk; aiming for a one-hundred per cent completion…
